The Thrill of Fishing in Kotor Bay

Fishing in Kotor Bay is not just a pastime, but also an adventure that brings us closer to the marvels of the sea. Every year, as the season turns favorable, we ready our rods and reels for mackerels and bonitos – two of the most spirited fish in these waters.

Easy to Lure, Joy to Catch

Mackerels, with their iridescent skin and swift movements, are a delight to catch. The perfect time for mackerel fishing is from June to October, especially in the early hours between 6:00 and 7:00 AM. Using fresh sardines as bait and a three-hook system, we always end up with success. There’s a simple joy in watching these fish come right under the boat, almost within arm’s reach, and the excitement is unmatched.

We always lure mackerels by throwing chums of fish into the water. It’s fascinating how they get attracted to the scent and sometimes even bite on empty hooks! Here’s a video of how we do it.

Mackerels are known for their migratory patterns, often traveling in large schools. They are typically drawn to Kotor Bay by the abundance of smaller fish and favorable water temperatures during these months.

The Challenge of Atlantic Bonitos

Bonitos, on the other hand, are a different game. These fish are fighters, making them a challenging yet rewarding catch. One time, a big Atlantic bonito managed to cut the line, and several got away, but the thrill of the chase was incredible. Eventually, we did end up catching one along with a dozen mackerels – a day well spent, followed by a hearty lunch.

The true challenge with bonitos comes when it’s time to bring them aboard. After a tireless fight, we often have to use a brankarelo (it. dial. brancarello) , a traditional tool with a hook at its end, to secure these vigorous fish. This technique is a testament to the strength and resilience of bonitos, making each catch a memorable achievement.
