Lipci – History and Activities on Water

Walk to Lipci Rock
Depending on your point of departure, we head straight to Lipci Rock. Upon arrival, we take a short and easy 10‑minute walk through rocks, trees, and Mediterranean vegetation.
Lipci Rock – Prehistoric Drawings

Lipci Rock is located in a naturally formed “amphitheatre” above the village of Lipci, on the northern side of Risan Bay. It is an archaeological monument of the second category, preserving prehistoric Iron Age drawings: deer hunting scenes, a symbolic rising sun, and other ancient symbols.
Roman Mosaics in Risan

After visiting Lipci, we continue to the Roman mosaics in Risan.
“Rhizon was first mentioned in the 4th century BCE as the main fortress of the Illyrian state, where Queen Teuta took refuge during the Illyrian Wars. In Roman times, Rhizinium became an oppidum civium Romanorum. Its most prosperous period was in the 1st and 2nd centuries, with grand villas and a population of around 10,000. The five mosaics preserved from that era are among the most valuable remains in Montenegro.”
Our Lady of the Rocks

On our way, we stop at Our Lady of the Rocks for a 30‑minute break. You can visit the church and museum, which hold:
- A Carrara marble relief of the Annunciation by Venetian sculptor Giovanni Bonaca
- Votive paintings of ships
- An embroidered icon of the Virgin (1828) by Jacinta Kunic of Perast, who stitched her own hair into the figures
- A collection of tools and weapons, reminders of the sanctuary’s defensive past (More about the Museum of Perast)
Perast

From the island, we continue to Perast. Occasionally, my wife joins the tour to offer a free guided visit. After a short stay, we head back.
Swimming Stop
On the way back, we take a swimming break in the middle of the bay, where the water is exceptionally clear thanks to fresh mountain springs flowing into the sea.
