Kotor municipality, known for the highest amount of precipitation in Europe, harbors a unique natural spectacle – the ephemeral waterfall named Sopot. Nestled in the lush landscapes of Montenegro, Sopot is not just a breathtaking natural wonder but also a testament to the region’s rich cultural and ecological tapestry.

Extensive rainfall contributes to the emergence of several natural phenomena, influencing the formation of specific life forms. One of them is the ephemeral waterfall named Sopot.

Mountains here are specific for their porosity – the labyrinth of small and large canals that water creates on its way. Often they end up creating sizeable underground water reserves.

There are many underground lakes in the Montenegrin karst. One is formed below Crkvice, in the mountains above Risan. During heavy rainfall, the water from the lake moves towards the bay and emerges in the form of Sopot, the beautiful ephemeral waterfall.

Every time Sopot reappears, it creates loud noise that people in the vicinity can hear. A large white cloud accompanies the sounds of the precipitous watery force that plunges into the depth of the sea. As soon as one sees it, one realizes the waterfall’s enormous power, which comes out with an impressive capacity of 200,000 l of water per second.

The cave that the waterfall emerges from is also an exciting spot to explore on dry days. Even during the hottest point in summer, the lake set far in the cave’s hallway is 3.6 meters deep.

Nature reserve

In 2021, Sopot was declared a nature reserve under preventive protection which provides exceptional biodiversity value.  Especially the Savalia savaglia Bertolini coralligenous community, which is exposed to significant anthropogenic pressure.

This species’ presence near Sopot and Dražin Vrt is twice as many as all known colonies in the Mediterranean.

Apart from Sopot, other emerging natural phenomena exist because of the excessive rainfall, like underwater springs. Thanks to them, the sea water is constantly purified, which makes swimming in Kotor Bay an absolute pleasure.

Historical and Cultural Significance

The area surrounding Sopot waterfall has a storied past, deeply interwoven with local culture and history. This region, enriched by the waters of Sopot, has been a cradle of civilization for centuries, with each era leaving its mark. From ancient folklore to modern traditions, the waterfall and its environs tell a tale of human resilience and the symbiotic relationship between man and nature.

How To Get There

Sopot is located on route E65, only a few minutes away from Risan. You may reach it by car, and there is a free parking lot. However, if you are in Risan, you can get there on a leisurely walk.
