Marine Conservation: What To Do To Save Sea Turtles

marine conservation - an image of a sea turtle

As a seasoned captain of fishing tours in the Bay of Kotor, I’ve witnessed firsthand the splendor of the sea’s depths and its inhabitants. But, beyond the thrill of the catch lies a deeper calling – the conservation of our underwater allies. From the delicate dance of jellyfish to the graceful glide of eagle rays, each creature plays a pivotal role in our marine tapestry.

Ray Rescue

Witness a common eagle ray pup caught during our trip, a testament to our commitment to marine life. Though the final moments of freedom are unseen, the ray is safely returned to the waters.

Sea Turtles and Noble Pen Shells

Our beautiful Montenegrin coast is a refuge for not only sea turtles but also for the Noble pen shell, locally known as ‘palastura.’ This rare and endangered species, once harvested for its ‘sea silk,’ now faces the threat of extinction. Like the sea turtles, these mollusks are an integral part of our marine ecosystem, anchoring themselves to the sea bed with filaments as delicate as the balance of life they represent.

As stewards of these waters, there is much that ordinary people can do to ensure the survival of the Noble pen shell. We can start by being vigilant and respectful during our sea escapades; avoiding anchoring in seagrass meadows where they reside, being cautious not to disturb their habitats when diving or snorkeling, and participating in beach clean-ups to ensure their environment remains pristine. By raising awareness and reporting sightings to local conservation groups, we can contribute to the monitoring and protection efforts of these creatures.

Noble pen shell

Between 2012 and 2016, we recorded 48 sea turtles on our coast, with only half surviving due to various threats. They, alongside the Noble pen shell, remind us of our duty to protect these vulnerable species as they navigate the waters of the Northern Adriatic, seeking refuge and sustenance before continuing their life cycles in the Ionian and Aegean seas.

The images accompanying this post, which are withheld to safeguard these noble creatures, convey vital actions every fisherman can take to aid in the conservation of our marine friends. If you encounter a sea turtle, your actions can mean the difference between life and death. Here’s what you can do to help these gentle giants of the sea:

Call to Action

I invite you to join us in this crucial mission. Share with us your experiences and let’s work together to preserve the wonders of the sea. Your voice and actions are powerful catalysts for change.

Every line cast and net drawn writes a story in the vast sea we call home. By engaging in sustainable fishing practices and heeding the call of conservation, we can ensure that this story—a narrative of coexistence and respect—continues for generations to come.
